Final for my Illustration Tarot Card project... The Moon Card. I'm sick of looking at it so figured it was time to stop and post it >>;

...I find it alittle dumb that they have a mixed media category, but then at the end you had to pick whether the piece is digital or traditional... don't that defeat the purpose of having a MIXED MEDIA category? >_< (can you tell I'm not in a good mood?) Anyways... laid down base colors and textures with watercolors, and then did the details and corrections in ps.

I was also sick of my teacher telling me to not be so monochromatic with my colors... she was right of course, but I was still sick of it xD; and... I might have gone abit over broad to prove her wrong :shrug: You can be the judge of that.

For alittle more info on this character and project, go here [link] that's also the wip, so see the difference x3

Behh..... Will have the Sun up this weekend.... maybe... >>;

This site is full of little things like that that annoy me, but I stay because there are so many wonderful artists here. I also hate it when they change a feature that used to be free to subscriber-only. They should make new features for subscribers, not take existing ones away from every one else.

I love the concept, and I think the colours suit the moon theme. When things are seen in moonlight, they are naturally very monochromatic. Colours are nice, but they shouldn't interfere with the theme and what the artist wants to portray.

Woaaaah, that is gorgeous. :O
Love the way you coloured that, what kind of style did you use? Or rather, HOW did you colour it?

x3 thank you! Welllll... first I started on watercolor, and used paint drops and salt to get the textures I wanted. Then (after I realized I totally couldn't do what I wanted in watercolor anymore xD; ) I scanned it and started coloring and detailing in ps, and I used low opacity layering and brush options like wet edges and textures and scattering, and brush patterns that were splotchy shaped to match the watercolor feel. Annnnnd, that's about it xD I just kept tinkering with it till I was happy =)

Dreampunk is like steampunk but you use tarrot cards and voodoo magic.

Hmmm. "Dreampunk." I like that.

The picture itself...mm, I think you've done better work, personally. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad--The composition and characters are good, the willows and the textures are all very nice (and I like that you added the water) but the contrast is waaaay too high. On my screen, at least, the white is incredibly bright, and it bleaches out the entire piece. I think a lot will depend on how you print this piece. If you can get it toned down a little bit so it's not so bleached out, it will be good-- because I really like all the subtle colors in the background.

Speaking of printing, I saw your massive print of the 'Esmerelda' piece in the student show. (It had a colored tag on it-- did you get in after all?) Where did you get that printed? It looked like pretty awesome quality, and I may have to do something similar with a few of my pieces if it's not too expensive.

Thanks for letting me know about the contrast. I didn't think it looked so bad on my screen, but I should know better then to trust my evil, plotting computer >>; grr... I'll try to tone it down a bit.

Yeah =) I got an email back and they accepted it x3 ehh.. but now due to some complication, they want me to change the framing to something that would better fit the dimensions, so depending on what I can get done, I don't know if it'll still get into the show ;__; I was already stressed to the max finishing up these final projects this weekend, I seriously don't need this right now. I want to go to Prism to get some of those frames you were talking about, but I don't have a car and can't find any other way to get there short of calling a freaking cab... needless to say, I have better things to do >>; I hope they'll accept foamcore and matboard in that case... buuu....

As for printing, it was Repro. Came to about $16 for that size (lol, and I asked to a color test print off, but then they did the large print on a different printer, of course e__e ergg...) but, I'm still pretty happy with it. God... I just hope I can get everything worked out for the framing this weekend Dx Gaaahhhhh!!!!

Ah, and what about you? Did you get in??? =)

Nah, I didn't get anything in. :/ A bit disappointing, but as I lean more towards the fine art side I didn't really expect to get in, since they always go for the 'omg so cool' abstracty stuff.

When do you have to get the picture reframed by? I mean, I'm pretty sure they'll accept matted-only pieces if that's what you've got, but if you need a ride or something to Prism, I'd be happy to help out. Besides critique on Monday and Jim's class on Tuesday, I'm pretty free next week. (I might even be able to do something Sunday if that's what you needed.)

$16 for a print that was, what, 15 x 20" is pretty good. I'll definitely have to check them out. I think I'm just going to do my own prints for illustration, since I'm moving over the weekend and I don't think Kathy will really make that much of a fuss over it. :/

I still have to start my digital piece. >_>;; I think that is going to be done in a frantic bout of activity Saturday night and Sunday...possibly Tuesday afternoon, too. Argh.

Ahhh... that sucks D= You totally should have gotten in with how good your art is. Hell, I was even surprised I got in, since they're judging is so skewed >>;

Omg! Really?? Ahh, that'd be so helpful ;__; I'm waiting for an email back from them about it, but I think they just said I could pick it up tomorrow (which works for me anyway since I was going to see the Capstone event on campus) and I could get the framing done over the weekend. If you're not too busy, Sunday would be awesome, but I can see about negotiating a better time when I pick it up tomorrow if not. Ahhh... thank you so much for the help!! :happycry:

Yeah, it was a pretty good deal, when I think about how much Kinkos or someother place would have charged. it was $5 per square foot, and the total size ended up being 27 x 17" actually. I think the only thing I would be wary about is which printer they would use, since it got alot darker (it worked out pretty ok this time though, since it matched my computer screen alittle more then most print outs, I guess) Yeah, and I wouldn't worry, since you usually have really nice prints of your work. Ooo... and good luck with your moving >>; I couldn't think of a more inconvenient time (lol, or maybe it's that you're a good student who doesn't do her work last minute and has time later, unlike me xD Uhhh... why did I chose now to start a new game of Windwaker? D8 )

Uhh.. I don't even what to think about that right now. I was working on it a bit today, and found I no longer have the option to convert it to CMYK, which figures now that I was getting used to working in it =\ So Jim will have to settle for RGB. Annnnd... at the rate Issac is going, I doubt I'll be able to get to Doppel, which is a shame since, if I had the time, that piece could have been interesting. Right now, I don't even know if I can do Issac any justice ;__; I fail. Fuuu... just hang in there =__= So close...

Okay. I'll send you a note with my cell number, and that way you can call and we can set up a time on Sunday. :)

The moving is at a fairly inconvenient time-- but then, I was planning on having all my critiques Wednesday, and so having the weekend to move. That... didn't quite happen since she moved crits back to Monday, but since I did finish my Illustration (I am so glad now that I was crazy and started work on one of them right after the color study crit) and my last watercolor is very nearly done, I'm not too worried. I'm still working last minute, though... as I somehow have to find time to do my last digital piece within the next few days. I think I'm just going to copy an old photo of my cat I've been meaning to paint forever. It's just easier. :/

I don't know why Jim insists on CMYK. It really doesn't make any difference that I can see, and since almost every competition is going to require you to send in RGB (so they can open it online) and you're going to post things on the web anyway... I asked around, and could not find any artists who work in CMYK, they all did their art in RGB and it seemed to print out fine. :/ Best of luck on finishing your project.

ok =) will do. Is there any specific time you're free on Sunday? I think I'll be free anytime, er well, how ever long the store is open anyway.

Aha, well it's good you knocked the illustration projects out of the way, and hopefully everything else should fall into place. It's like, I know I'm stressed at every semester end, but everything always works out pretty ok in the end. Hopefully it'll work for you too x3 Also, yay kitties x3

Lol, yeah i know xD I guess I was happy enough for the better printing thought, buuuut seeing how the majority on my stuff goes on the web (aka, too poor to be printed xD) ,and how it's a pain to try to submit something and have to convert to RGB because I forgot to change it >.<, I guess I should just forget about it xD Beeh! lol. Thanks, and good luck to you ;P

I'm available anytime on Sunday, though since I have much unpacking to do sometime in the afternoon is probably best. The store is open until 5 on Sundays though.

CMYK can matter if you're doing very high-end printing, but most inkjet printers will automatically convert the RGB to CMYK images anyway, and with a little tweaking you can generally make it pretty close. I think it may be more important in Illustrator things like he usually does, but for painting, the color limitations and the fact that many PS brushes don't work in CMYK mode seem to negate its usefulness for me.

Feh. Screw Kathy and her monochromatic insults. I like it mostly blue. After all, that's what color the moon is. Can't wait to see it in real life. I think it'll look awfully sharp with a black mat :D

Ahh shit >.< I completely forgot about having to mat this, I got so caught up being upset about the stupid gallery thing >>; buhh... another thing to add to the list. So do we need to had the finals at any percentage? Or just 100%? God... I don't even know what percentage I was working at... *doublefail*

Fail aside, thanks ^^;

Kathy said the minimum was 300% of (card) print size (although... I was working at 200% and I don't know that I really want to print at 300% because that's like 9x15" and that means I have to go to Repro. :/ I may just print at 200% and say screw it.
